Well, the best place to begin is by searching for local center by either contacting the district offices or checking on the Internet. The next step is to select the right program. It is vital that the teachers and the students are working together in the early years of their education and then move forward to create the best possible learning environment. Each program is different and has its own teaching philosophy, but the primary goal of each one is to achieve a sense of success in each individual learning style. This is something that can be accomplished with the proper training and supervision.Next, the student should learn how to be more confident with his or her ability and should know the program and the curriculum. A positive attitude towards school will aid in the process and is also needed for the students to understand their learning style and how to manage this effectively. The student should have confidence in his or her abilities, but the teacher should also show the student how important it is for him or her to do well in their course work and assignments. This will ensure that the student will learn more than the average student who might be picked out for additional attention.

Want to Learn Spanish Our Guide to Getting Started
Want to Learn Spanish Our Guide to Getting Started Suzy S. Learning a new language, such as Spanish, can be an exciting undertaking! Even if you are not planning to visit a foreign country on your next vacation, a second language can help keep your mind stimulated. Heres an overview of the different ways to learn Spanish, to help you determine which option will work best for you. Your Local Community College Remember that campus thats just down the road? You dont have to be a recent high school graduate to enroll or take classes there. In fact, many of the students at community colleges are in satisfying full-time careers and are just looking to expand their knowledge in areas that dont pertain to work. Check out the website, or even stop by their admissions office. There should be plenty of information for you about continuing education, including Spanish classes. Youll be looking at a minimal time commitment per week, and will be able to converse with the instructor and your fellow students. Of course, this only works if your personal schedule fits with the class time, and if you miss a class there is limited flexibility aside from working on your own to catch up to the rest of the group. Reading Books Most libraries have a large assortment of language books. You can learn Spanish at your own pace this way, and you cant beat the price! In addition to language resource books, you might also be able to find short stories or novels written in other languages. This can help you progress, as long as you know which books are at the appropriate level for you. The downside to reading books is that you wont pick up any pronunciation tactics. Unless you already have a general understanding of Spanish before starting, you will probably run into issues with more complicated words. Many books that help you learn Spanish include pronunciation guides, but when youre moving up to reading fiction works, not all of the words will be familiar to you already, which can pose a problem. Using Online Resources If getting to your local library doesnt fit within your schedule, you can also opt for the online route. There are many free resources available, including apps, blogs, videos, and online games. Similar to reading books in Spanish, however, this option leaves out the all-important aspect of conversing with fellow Spanish speakers to build your skills. Take a Trip to a Spanish-Speaking Country Even though you might not be trying to learn Spanish to head to a Spanish-speaking country, it is a great way to learn it! Most people you run into will speak mostly (if not only) Spanish, so theyll be glad to speak to you in their native tongue. After you learn the basics of Spanish, total immersion in the language can help you figure out the many nuances. However, this tactic can be frustrating at times if you dont have a good foundation in Spanish and are speaking with people who have limited English skills. Working With a Private Tutor If you can find a Spanish tutor in your area, or even online, this is the most flexible route available. Since a private tutor works with you one-on-one, he or she will cater the lessons to both your learning style and your pace not so fast that youre not mastering topics, but not so slow that youre getting bored with the lessons either. Your private tutor can also help you find online resources or print materials to help you between lessons. You can also ask your private tutor about traveling out of the country and learning Spanish on foreign soil. Many of our TakeLessons tutors have traveled extensively, and have many stories to share! So what are you waiting for? Get started learning Spanish today! Bonus: Learn about the budget-friendly options for learning Spanish! Interested in Private Lessons? What is it Like to Attend the University of Edinburgh
What is it Like to Attend the University of Edinburgh Aura earned her bachelors degree in classics from the University of Edinburgh. She specializes in Latin tutoring, Greek tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at the University of Edinburgh: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Aura: The University of Edinburgh is very urban. It has campus locations all over the Old Town of Edinburgh, Scotland. The School of History, Classics, and Archaeology, where I spent all of my time, is right in Teviot Place, near the main library. There are plenty of local buses to take you all over the city. Edinburgh is a relatively small city, so its totally manageable by foot or bicycle. All of the university buildings in the George Square/Teviot Place area are well lit and have security guards. I felt safe walking around at any time of the day or evening. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Aura: All of the professors have office hours and most are happy to answer whatever questions you send over email as well. The teaching assistants and tutors were extremely helpful, too. I was especially well-supported when working on my dissertation. My supervisor and all of the professors in my department were there for me to bounce ideas off of, recommend titles, and help me meet my deadlines. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Aura: Most freshmen live in the university housing. The buildings are large, so you meet a lot of people quickly. The food isnt great, but most of the buildings are new and the area is right near the park around Arthurs Seat. Its also quite central, about a 20 minute walk away from most university locations. After freshman year, people share apartments with friends all over the city. There are a lot of reasonably priced student flats. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Aura: The University of Edinburghhas all the typical undergraduate liberal arts majors, as well as veterinary, law, and medical schools. In a university of 18,000 students, I really appreciated how small my department was. I knew my Latin and Greek professors well and was friendly with all of my peers. I did have larger lectures when I took ancient history classes, but nothing staggering. The library was well-stocked for whatever I needed to research, and my professors were all major players in their fields. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Aura: Its always jarring being new at a large school, but the school organizes a great orientation week where youre out meeting new people and familiarizing yourself with the city. I found my two main groups of friends from my classes and from my field and ice hockey teams. The university has a huge number of clubs and societies, and joining them is a fast and fun way to meet likeminded friends. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Aura: The career center was pretty helpful when I was putting together my resume. It was easy to get an appointment to ask for some advice. Edinburgh has a good reputation within the UK and abroad, and large companies did recruit directly from the school. I ended up applying to grad school and my professors were extremely helpful with that process. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Aura: There are a lot of students at Edinburgh, but there are a lot of venues, so most of the time places felt busy, but not overwhelmingly so. The student union had plenty of seating and cafes. In regards to the library, unless it was exam time, if you got there before 9:00 AM, you would have no trouble finding a desk. The gym could get busy, but if you timed it right, you never had to wait for a machine. Describe the surrounding town. Aura: Edinburgh is a gorgeous city, and because there is no area that is strictly Edinburgh campus, you are always wandering around in it. It is delightful being a tourist in your city, checking out the castle, cathedral, palace, and various museums and restaurants (most of which have some sort of student deal). The area near George Square is full of student-friendly cafes and shops. Students walk downtown frequently for shopping, cinemas, and more nightlife. Its easy to get to the train station to explore more of Scotland and there are numerous ways to get to the airport (its about 25 minutes outside the city center) to go further afield. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Aura: The entire student body is about 18,000 people, but this figure is spread out over many, many departments. I would estimate the largest lectures could easily have around one hundred people. However, whatever your major, you have more choice in classes in your third and fourth years of study, and so classes become much smaller at the honors level. In my first and second year I was in some very large history classes. In addition to the lectures in those classes, we always broke down into smaller groups for tutorials, which had 10 or fewer people in them. In my third and fourth year, I was never in class with more than 25 people. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Aura: I really enjoyed all of my classes and professors, but if I had to pick one, I would have to say that in my third year, I was in an Iliad class with Dr. Maciver, which was awesome. Everyone who does Greek is familiar with, or has probably translated, a decent chunk of Homer. However, the depth and the breadth of Dr. Macivers knowledge of epic poetry was inspiring. He created an environment in which it was not uncommon for students to laugh, feel sorrow at sad moments, ask questions, and have their minds blown by analysis of complicated Homeric similes. It was interesting having Dr. Maciver as a professor for the Aeneid, a Latin epic which borrows heavily from Homer, the following year. Check out Auras tutoring profile. How to Support Your Stressed Student
How to Support Your Stressed Student The pressure and stress of academia can, at times, become too much for studentsand excess stress can have an impact on all areas of your students life. Take note of any negative changes in behavior or body language, or withdrawal from extracurriculars or school interests. If you notice any of these changes or your student expresses to you that they are experiencing feelings of excess stress, follow these strategies to support your stressed student: Support your stressed student by fostering open communication When it comes to understanding your students stress, communication is key. Aim to understand what is causing stress in your student and how it affects them individually. Sometimes stress can manifest as physical symptoms, such as stomach pains or headaches. Other times, stress can make your student shut down or withdraw. Once you have initiated an open line of communication with your student and have a better understanding of their stress, work together to develop coping strategies. Maybe there is a particular song or musical group whose music helps them feel calm. If this is the case, encourage your student to listen to this song before school, in study hall (if allowed), or during study breaks. [RELATED: How to Help Your Elementary School Student Cope with Test Anxiety] Support your stressed student by creating a schedule When your student is experiencing stress, examine their schedule and workload to see if any adjustments can be made. For example: Are your students classes too hard? If so, inquire with your students teacher if there are extra credit opportunities, or seek out a private tutor to reduce stress. Are your students extracurriculars impacting their academics? If so, ask your student if any of their extracurriculars are causing stress. Eliminate any if necessary, or scale back depending on the activitys demands. Does your student get overwhelmed during study time? If so, try structuring homework time differently and manage their time depending on what their stressors are. For instance, if your student prefers to get the challenging subjects out of the way first, plan homework time accordingly. In addition to helping your student adjust their schedule to lessen stress, encourage your student to schedule downtime. While it is important to dedicate time to homework, studying, and extracurriculars, setting aside relaxation time can be vital to reducing stress. Encourage your student to spend some time each dayeven if its just 15 minutes before bedreading, journaling, or doing some activity they find relaxing and enjoyable. Often, students will get so overwhelmed with projects and activities that they forget to factor any downtime into their schedule. [RELATED: 3 Ways Students Can Benefit From Journaling] Support your stressed student by developing a game plan Use the strategies you both developed during your discussions, and implement them into a plan of action for when your student experiences stress. Sit down with your student and go over these strategies so they feel more equipped when stressful situations arise. If your student experiences stress at school, inform your students teacher(s) of the situation. Explain that your student has coping strategies, and work with him or her to find ways these can be incorporated. If your students teacher understands the situation, he or she can be a great ally for your student if stress strikes during the school day. If your student experiences stress at home during study or homework time, implement breaks and positive reinforcement. Encouraging your student to practice good time management techniques can be another positive way to reduce stress. Often, students get stressed during tests or homework time because they feel rushed and fear they wont complete the task on time. Developing time management skills can help your student feel more confident, and in turn less stressed, when encountering these situations both at home and at school. Stress affects everyone differently, so its important to understand your students individual needs. Have conversations with your student regarding what causes their stress and various ways to manage it. If your student knows they have you on their side, they can approach not only academics, but each aspect of their life with increased confidence. Any topics you want to know more about? Let us know! 3 Methods for Setting Goals
3 Methods for Setting Goals January is often viewed as a month for change, and most change starts with setting goalsthat is, verbalizing or writing down what you hope to achieve. Goal-setting can be a daunting process; you may not know where to begin or how to frame the objectives you have in mind. Many people give up on their New Years resolutions because they set unrealistic standards for themselves, but this issue can be fixed by finding techniques to help you set goals. Methods for goal-setting can include BSQ, SMART, and OGTM. Eager to set goals, but not sure where to begin? Keep reading to learn three methods for setting goals in the new year: Goal-setting method #1: BSQ BSQ stands for big, small, and quick. Begin this goal-setting method by thinking big. What do you hope to achieve in the coming months? Summarize your goal in several words or a sentencefor example, Land an internship thats related to my major. Dont worry if your goal seems unreachable now. The idea is to start big and to then move on to the specific steps that will make your goal attainable. The next step in BSQ is to act small. That is, enumerate each action you will take to reach your goalfor instance, to craft a well-written cover letter or to attend a networking event at your college. Its best to be as detailed as possible with this step; vague courses of action will not give you a clear idea of how to reach your goal. Finally, move quick. This is the step where you establish deadlines for yourself. Develop a separate deadline for each action you have brainstormed in the previous step. You may decide you need to craft a well-written cover letter by mid-January and attend a networking event sometime in February. Deadlines are essential when goal-setting because they hold you accountable. [RELATED: The Importance of Self-Reflection: How to End the Year on a Positive Note] Goal-setting method #2: SMART SMART is an acronym that explains the characteristics that contribute to effective goals: Specific: Your goal should be precise. Rather than setting the general goal to read more, decide how often and how much you would like to read. Measurable: Your goals failure or success can be calculated in some way. For example, you can measure your progress by the number of pages you have read in a day or week, or by the amount of time you have spent reading in a day or week. Agreed upon: In the event that other parties are involved, everyone needs to agree on the goal. If you are part of a book club, all members should agree on the reading material or pace. Otherwise, the club may dissolve due to differences of opinion. Realistic: Your goal must be attainable. For instance, you should allot yourself weeks to read a dense novel, not days. Be honest about what your schedule and brain can handle, and dont set unrealistic goals. Time-based: Your goal should have a deadline. Give yourself neither too much nor too little time to accomplish your goal. A goal without a deadline will almost certainly be postponed. [RELATED: Time Management Tips for Students] Goal-setting method #3: OGTM The OGTM (or objectives, goals, tactics, and metrics) method for goal-setting starts broad and becomes specific. You begin by creating an objective for yourselffor example, to improve in English class. The OGTM method defines an objective as a generalized, long-term hope that may be accomplished in a few months or even a few years. Next, streamline your objective into a goal (or a more tangible target). This may be learning five new vocabulary words per week. Tactics, much like the act small step in BSQ, refer to the techniques that enable you to reach your objective. To improve your English grade, you can download a vocabulary flashcard app for your phone or write in a journal every morning. Metrics, much like measurable from the SMART acronym, refers to the methodology for assessing a goals success. This step relies on numbers (such as percentages) to tell a story about the extent to which the objective was achieved. Students should notice that, although BSQ, SMART, and OGTM contain different letters, they embody similar ideals. No matter which goal-setting framework you choose in 2018, make sure your goals are specific, measurable, and attainable. With a researched plan, anything is possible!
